5 Things I Love About My Winnebago

After almost two months in my MicroMinnie I can say I’m quite pleased! I spent the better part of a year researching dozens of campers and spent countless hours debating if I even needed one or if a van would be a better option. I ended up with a camper mainly because of the type of work I do, I can be home for 3 days and then off on the road for a week, and it’s entirely unpredictable. For that reason alone it was worth it for me to have a space to come home to that required no extra thoughts of where to park or shower. My new Tacoma, a van, or my old Honda car camper are still the long term plan but not until I retire from the industry.

With a budget of 35 big ones, I set out to wade through the massive pool of potential future homes for River and I. There were dozens of models in that range, which led me to the first decision, new or used? With so many options and being this was my first camper I was very uncertain but ultimately went with a new camper as I didn’t want to have added expenses of replacing mattresses/cushions or dealing with previously damaged walls, etc. Now it was onto picking a brand to go with or rather, which ones to avoid. I knew a few brands I really liked and had some experience with in the past, and it all came down to either a winnebago or an airstream. They’re both known for their impressive quality, resilience to adverse weather, and being very off-grid friendly. After looking a bit further it was determined I’d never find a new airstream in my budget so winnebago it was and wow, am I happy with my choice, so here are the top 5 things I absolutely love about this camper.

1. The Size

Being 22 feet long and only 7 feet wide, this camper easily fits anywhere and at less than 4,000 pounds it can be hauled by a plethora of vehicles. This was the biggest consideration for me, I didn’t want to be stuck buying a big and very expensive truck. I ended up buying a Toyota Tacoma and couldn’t be happier with it. This model also has a slide out which houses the dinette, a great option to really open up the space, this camper feels much bigger than it looks.

2. The Kitchen

I really enjoy cooking so having a decent space was one of my top priorities. I know I’m asking an awful lot of such a small camper but this MicroMinnie has almost impressed me. The fridge has more room than I need, the cabinets although lacking in organization are sufficient, the 3 burner cooktop is plenty for me, the convection microwave is fantastic, and lastly the sink. The freakin sink, I can not say enough good things about the sink holy smokes do I love it! It’s bigger than the sink in my old house was, deep enough to easily hold any pots/pans, stainless so it will stay nice for years to come and mine came with a very nice faucet. The sink may honestly be my favorite thing in this entire camper!

3. The Bathroom

A weird thing to be happy about I know, and I would imagine most people would dislike this portion of the camper, but I love how small and simple it is. Everything I need(except a shelf and TP holder but more on that in another post) and nothing I don’t. The shower is plenty big for me with three small shelves to hold all the necessities. The toilet is nothing special but also nothing bad, it works well and is comfortable enough.

4. The Power Jacks/Awning

When parking the rv the first thing to do is set out the stabilizer jacks, and pushing a button to do this is so nice! No time and energy wasted on hand cranking them, no tool to lose, or bolt head to round over. And the same goes for the awning, shade at the push of a button. Small luxuries like these have made the transition from house to camper fun and exciting.

5. The Dinette

I was very close to opting for a model without the dinette in favor of a small table on a pedestal and a jackknife sofa. I sit at the table constantly and it just so happens to be the perfect height for standing as well. It’s fairly comfortable and provides a ton of storage underneath, though I do wish it offered better accessibility to it all. I have not yet folded the table down but it does convert into a bed to make this camper sleep 5-6 people.

Although there are definitely things I dislike about this camper, I love most things about it. With how many options there are available I’m sure I’d like any camper I ended up with, but I sure do love this one!
